Before beginning your home search, consider the characteristics that would make a location work particularly well for you:

Think About the Future

The right location should work for you today, but it's also worth considering how well it may work several years from now.

How long do you expect to own the home? Could your commute or employment change? Might your household needs change? Are there planned developments, transportation projects, or growth patterns that could affect the surrounding area?

Location can also influence a property's future marketability and resale value. Understanding the surrounding community and how it is changing can be an important part of evaluating a home as a long-term investment.

Explore the Community

One of the best ways to evaluate a location is to spend some time there.

Drive through the neighborhood at different times of day. Explore the surrounding roads. Visit nearby parks, restaurants, shopping areas, and community facilities. Consider the everyday trips you'll make if you live there—not just the drive you take to see the house.

The goal is to understand not only what the neighborhood looks like, but what living there might actually feel like.
